My Doctor Found a Hernia Incidentally but I Have No Symptoms. What Do I Do?

Hernia is a common issue, but only a certain percentage of people who develop them get them corrected. This is due to two factors. For starters, many hernias are asymptomatic, which means they don\’t protrude or create pain. As a result, patients may be unaware that they exist. In other instances, a hernia may be discovered but the patient decides not to have it treated for various reasons.

A patient who discovers they have a hernia during an unplanned exam has most likely been living with it for a long time. Many hernias lie unnoticed and untreated for years, decades, or even the rest of a patient\’s life. In most cases of asymptomatic hernias, patients feel that they do not require treatment. But because the risk of strangulation cannot be ruled out. So better get them checked.

Diagnostic imaging or a medical check-up for a separate ailment led to the diagnosis of a hernia in this case. At this stage, the patient should seek the advice of a skilled hernia surgeon. A physical exam will be performed again during this appointment to evaluate the type of hernia and any hazards that the patient may have as a result of it. Because of the significant risk of strangulation, certain hernias, such as femoral hernias, virtually always need to be corrected. Other hernias may be treated at right time depending on their location and characteristics.

The patient should decide to undergo hernia surgery ASAP. Please think about the following:

  1. Is the patient a youngster or an elderly person? Younger, fit patients are candidates for physical work and because hernias only get worse over time, it\’s probably better to fix them sooner rather than later. Older individuals with larger hernias that may not cause pain should not wait because the dangers of strangulation/obstruction rise as they get older and their general health deteriorates.
  2. The size of the hernia will influence whether or not it should be repaired. Smaller hernias are more prone to cause symptoms including discomfort, pain, and, on rare occasions, strangulation, but larger hernias are less likely to strangle. While the size of the hernia is important, it\’s worth remembering that hernias only get worse over time, necessitating a larger and more complicated repair.
  3. In any non-emergency hernia case, patient education is, of course, the important element. There is no need to wait to have a hernia fixed till the hernia is strangulated. The majority of hernias are treated because of the hernia\’s impact on the patient\’s quality of life. A repair should be performed even if the hernia is asymptomatic.
