4 Ways to Prevent Gallstone

Gallstones are discovered to be prevalent in 6.12% of the adult population in India. Rapid weight loss, bariatric surgery in some cases, or following an extremely low-calorie diet regimen can increase the risk of gallstones. Crash diets and rapid weight reduction can boost cholesterol levels in the bile, increasing the risk of cholesterol gallstones, so weight loss should preferably be gradual and consistent.

 

  1. Eat Healthfully

Diet has an integral part in preventing gallbladder disease, but it isn\’t limited to fruits and vegetables. Gallstone disease can be reduced by eating a balanced diet of plant-based foods such nuts, fruits, vegetables, fibre, and foods containing mono or polyunsaturated fats, along with grains and little to no red meat.

Here are some suggestions for what foods to eat and what foods to avoid:

  • Stick to healthy fats: Fat has a terrible reputation, but not all fat is harmful. The mono- and polyunsaturated fats are found in olive oil, canola oil, avocados, canola, flaxseed, fish, and omega-3 fatty acids found in avocados canola, flaxseed, and fish, all help to prevent gallstone disease. Healthy fats and fish oil may be especially beneficial for people with high triglyceride levels, as they aid in the regular emptying of the gallbladder\’s contents. Saturated fats, such as those found in fatty meats, butter, and other animal products, should be avoided since they can raise your risk of gallstones and high cholesterol, among other health problems. Choose lean meat and skim milk as low-fat alternatives to red meat and whole milk.

 

  • Get fiber from fruits, vegetables, and nuts: Gallstone disease can be avoided by eating a fiber-rich diet from whole-grain bread and cereals, fruits and vegetables, and plant-based protein sources like peanuts, walnuts, and legumes. Snacking on almonds is a healthy method to satisfy hunger while also aiding weight loss.

 

  • Avoid sugars and carbs:  Carbohydrate sources such as white bread, white pasta, and refined sugars may increase the risk of gallstone disease. When possible, avoid sweets and opt for low-sugar meal alternatives.

 

  1. Exercise

Gallstones can also be avoided by engaging in regular physical activity. The exercise intensity doesn\’t seem to make much of a difference. Regular physical exercise of at least 150 minutes per week, or 30 minutes five times per week, has been shown to benefit health and prevent weight gain.

 

  1. Take Preventative Medication:

Drugs like ursodiol (Actigall or Urso) can be used to prevent gallstone formation. Especially for those who are at a high risk of gallstone disease or undergoing weight-loss surgery.

Statins, or cholesterol-lowering drugs, can also help to minimize the risk of gallstones. Orlistat (Alli or Xenical), a weight-loss medication, may help prevent gallstones by reducing bile acids, which contribute to gallstone formation.

Avoiding certain cholesterol-lowering medicines and hormone replacement therapy, such as postmenopausal hormones or oral contraceptives, can also help prevent gallstones.

Some triglyceride-lowering medications, such as gemfibrozil (Lopid) and fenofibrate (Fibricor or Tricor), can raise the risk of gallstone disease by inhibiting a liver enzyme and causing an increase in bile cholesterol levels.
